Okay, I passed my PADI OWSI in April 2017. Now what? I still have my current job in Dubai and my contract has me tied in for another 10 months. Do I wait? How will that gap look to future employers once I take the plunge (couldn’t resist) into the dive industry?
These are probably questions everyone that completes their IE asks himself or herself. I made a simple choice, get working now. But how? Where?
It took 10 minutes to google several dive centers in the UAE and obtain their email addresses. A quick look at their webpages and some social media stalking and I got a feel for each one of them and their main customer type. I was after a high volume of students not just recreational divers.
Next step, I emailed the ones I thought suitable, introducing myself and what I could offer in terms of freelancing for them. I also inquired about their policy when it came to me bringing students that I sourced myself to their center; mainly, how much of a cut of the course fee they would take.
Most replied within 24 hours.
The next step, go and visit each manager and simply have a chat. Nothing too specific just an opportunity to meet and greet.
So, here I am, a bit over a month from completing my IE and I have certified 2 Advanced Open Water students, 2 Open Water students, 2 Junior Open Water students, conducted 5 DSDs and have 3 students currently under training. All this while still working my regular desk job.
My message to new instructors is BE ACTIVE. In the yacht industry “dock walking” with CVs is common practice. I see no reason why, if you’re in a popular dive location, this approach shouldn’t be your first action.
Happy hunting and remember why you did your IE.
P.S. I will be available from the end of this year for anyone looking to hire a fulltime (phenomenal) OWSI with full commercial skipper license
If you are interested in getting into diving in Dubai be sure to contact Nick at firstname.lastname@example.org for a great experience and quality training.
I discovered Dive Careers when the IDC I was preparing to attend elsewhere was cancelled. A quick internet search led me to the IDC in Sri Lanka. The sign up was simple and from the very beginning Mark was very professional and supportive with the theory preparation.
The IDC was very smooth and was conducted in a relax but informative manner and the candidates were able to see each other develop daily with each practice lesson we delivered.
I felt very confident going into the IE and the results for each candidate were very high.
I would definitely recommend the company and Mark personally to anyone looking to complete their IDC.
Since I started teaching in the different locations we offer at Dive-Careers, there has never been a place better than another, but they all have their little something and all fantastic in their own way.
Let me give you an idea how its like…. This is how my adventure looks like. A bit from the past and from the future.
As I am mainly teaching in the Philippines and South Africa my year started in Bohol with Sierra Madre Divers. Having this kind of facilities makes it sooo easy to conduct a really nice and relax IDC. A successful IDC and Lucy is already working as an instructor at my next destination.
As I am finishing now the second IDC at Sierra Madre Divers and almost having the IE my guys are really focused during the mock IE Exams. So stay focused and you guys will rock!!!
The pearl of the Philippines. As you can see on the pictures I don’t need to say much about it. El Nido is a nice, small and relaxed place to start your careers as a dive professional. Even if Marie and the candidates saw a MANTA on the Open Water presentations I still think it was a blue spotted sting ray, but what ever! Maybe I am lucky from the 10th of April when I will be conducting the next program, so still time to join the next IDC and experience the vibe of Palawan.
Now That was in a nutshell what I was doing the beginning of the year…and getting ready for a full South Africa run.
The city where you can have 4 seasons in 1 day and yes I experienced it and it is not a rumor. Next to fantastic dives we did last year ( My best dive ever) I always love the launching and the adrenaline that kicks in when you leaving for a dive and almost sure that you will see sharks. I will be starting there on the 5th of May and maybe, I say maybe, we can convince Louis and Michelle ( the owners of Pro Dive) to show you where I did a dive with hundreds of seals and some Great Whites in Plettenburgh Bay, a memory for life I promise.
Beautiful beaches great diving and only a bit away from the ALIWAL Shoal where all the action is happening with the reggie’s. Even on your day off you can go and clear you mind and do some surfing with one of the pro’s in Ushaka where the dive center is located. Also Arne is always up for a Tec dive if you are interested.
Than just before I will return to the Philippines I will be conducting my very first IDC in CAPE TOWN
Famous for the shark diving and for me the cold water hahahah.
We will be conducting the program with Ollava Scuba Cape Town and I am excited to maybe be diving with the big boys from the ocean and it would be great to catch up with Laura Andreas who did the IDC with us in Koh Tao, Thailand and now an active PADI Instructor at Ollava Scuba.
After all this action its time for me to go back to the Philippines but South Africa don’t worry I will be back before you know.
If you have any questions about my upcoming programs please contact me on
I thoroughly enjoyed my time doing the IDC with Buddha View. They made me feel comfortable and relaxed while also making every day fun. The training was easy to follow but in depth and fully prepared me for the IE. Over all a brilliant course.
Mark, Marie and Andrea did a great job preparing us for the IE as well as life after the exam. I felt I learned exactly what I needed to to be ready for the working world. They made it fun and challenging and were always willing to help any time of day. I would recommend them to anyone wanting to do IDC!
“It was a great experience. The Instructors helped me to feel ready for the IE. Hard work and lot of fun made it possible. ”
All our Idcs are actually a life time experience, no matter which of the 7 country in the world we teach and former candidates could tell you the same! But Nusa Lembongan has something pretty spectacular to offer.
Ready for proper diving?! You will be happy there. The opportunity to get to learn how teach others how to blow bubbles underwater in such location is an opportunity to jump on.
How to get to Lembongan? Easy, 30min boat ride from Sanur located right next to Denpasar airport! The dive center is located 10min walk from where the boat transfer are dropping there guest coming from Sanur. But with all your luggage, the boat company will offer you a lift to the center anyway.
So no issues there!!
Where to stay? Easy, we have on site the choice of different rooms for different budget! So no issues there either!
What’s the plan?! Becoming a PADI Instructor with Platinum Course Director Marie who speaks English, French, Arabic and some Dutch! She has been working in the diving industry since 12 years and have a lot of experience to share. Serious fun guarantee with that one!
The 19th of April it is. This is the day we will kick off our 3rd IDC in Lembongan along with Two Fish divers.
The facilities are well located and the whole team at the dive center is there to help out and make sure that not only the training will go really well, but it will also be done in a great athmosphere.
Many local guides as well to give you good tips and tricks about the dive sites. There is nobody who can tell better then they do.
The boat is waiting for us right on the beach, every time we have an Open Water presentation. The pool…it’s right at the dive center.
When it comes to classroom, we have a perfect one, but no one says that we can’t maybe do a presentation by the pool! It’s the diving world after all…we have to keep it realistic and teaching by the pool is what you will do as future instructor!
As for us, course director, staff instructor and candidates, we will be cruising in between all that. The roller coaster ride, the one that sometime offers you nice high, the one that also reminds you something that the stress might kick in! But we go through it all, and all together! Most importantly, after a two weeks of work, fun, lots of practice, knowledge development, there is you, standing straight, head up…holding a certificate of completion, new PADI instructor.
It would be hard to invite you to an amazing program without talking about Nusa Lembongan as well. This is a growing location full of opprtutinies. Many of our former candidates have now made it their home and are either working there as Instructors or even opened their own business.
The sceneries are pretty spectaculars and the diving…a crazy experience.
There is of course the famous Mola Mola who attract there a lot of divers, but know that there is even more. Manta point and these fascinating raise dancing around you.
North of Nusa Penida, there are these amazing drift dives during which you only have to cross your leg, hover and let the show running in the front of you.
Blue corner…for the fans of adrenaline (and for experience divers we have to say)!
Lots and lots of places to see and discover.
Driving around the Island on the one of the day off during the IDC program will also make you refreshing your mind. It will be a proper breath of fresh air…but with a view!
Plenty of little new areas as well such as mushroom beach where you could even go for a Dutch snack!
Driving through fields, green zone, monkeys, Luwak Coffee area and breath taken scenery with the sea on one side and the dormant volcano on the other…the 2 hours drive in between Sanur/Denpasar and Amed goes pretty quick as your eyes will have a lot do absorb.
Once in Amed, you will realise that this location has everything you need. Feels like being on the country side, but with all necessary things around the corner.
Describe as “the most recent tourist development area in Bali”, you will find here long stretch of coast running from the village of Culik about 14 km eastwards incorporating the seven villages of Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Selang, Banyuning and Aas.
The drive is pretty impressive and a stop by one of numerous restaurants for a drink with a view on these beautiful black sandy beaches is a most.
Or heading to the “Sunset Restaurant” with a view from above is not a bad idea at all!
As if it wasn’t enough, driving further north to Tulamben, only takes 20 min by scooter. Tulamben is also all about diving! You will find there a few restaurant along the coast and of course, the place is famous for the Liberty Wreck, USAT Liberty was a United States Army cargo ship torpedoed by Japanese submarine in January 1942.
In 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung caused the vessel to slip off the beach, and it now lies on a sand slope in 9 to 30 m of water. The wreck is about 130 m long with the shallowest part at about 5 m deep and the deepest on the other side of the wreck at about 30 m deep.
We could keep on talking about the beauty and attractions of the place for ages actually! But best if you come and experience it yourself!
Dive-Careers is very proud to conduct here again this year PADI IDCs. In fact, our Platinum Course Director Marie has even decided to make it her home. Contact her directly on email@example.com
Same as on other locations, we will be in 2017 offering one more time our 15 days training in Amed. For all Dive Masters, Instructors who wish to cross over and who ever want to go work their way up, you know where to find us!
The PADI Instructor Development Course is a fantastic 15 days during which we are focusing on you, becoming a good instructor with good skills and knowledge. Our program includes much more practice then pre required, but also a lot of extras such as Marine Resource and Ecology seminar. We basically put in what we believe will make you standing out from the crowd once Instructor.
The location is also perfect for your learning process. Right on the beach, we can even do lectures under the sun with our two feet in the black sand if we want!
W also have a pool right on the spot for skills practices, rescue workshop and confined presentation. And you are welcomed to jump in for extra whenever you want!
On top of all that, we can do Open Water dives right from the beach in from of the dive center. Just need to watch out for mimic octopuses, sea horses, clown frog fish and different kinds of ghost pipe fish…yes, it’s such a hard life we live!
For those of you interested in becoming Instructor in different specialties, we will of course explore even more areas during the MSDT training, which follows the Instructor Examination on the last 2 days of the IDC. And course, the Liberty Wreck is on the schedule!
Being one of the rare center with a boat in Amed, we can get there within only 25min.
So much to do, so much to see, but putting all aspect of this place together, Amed is a little IDC paradise!
If you are heading to Indonesia and would like to know about our other IDC locations in country, keep in mind that we are also offering programs in Nusa Lembongan, Gili Air and Bunaken. Drop us an email for more information. www.dive-careers.com
On the evening of 12 October 2016, PADI Dive Professionals and PADI Divers gathered at the ATAHOTEL Naxos Beach in Giardini-Naxos, Sicily, Italy, to discuss ideas presented at the PADI GO PRO Event by PADI Territory Director Jonas Samuelsson. The evening was hosted by Dive-Careers.com and Sea Spirit Diving Resort during the Sicily PADI Instructor Development Course. It was a great evening, allowing people who are interested in becoming PADI Dive Professionals and those PADI PRO’s who want to take it to the next level, the chance to listen to a presentation full with opportunities for working in the diving world. Even better, there was the possibility to ask questions to experienced PADI Professionals and discuss about several topics like ‘how is it to work on a live-a-board?’ or ‘how is it like to work in the Maldives or Thailand?’. This GO PRO Event was also attended by PADI Platinum Course Director Mark Soworka from dive-careers.com and owners of Sea Spirit Diving Resort: PADI Master Instructor Carmelo Sgroi and PADI IDC Staff Instructor Cilla Lentz. They shared their diving knowledge and experience this evening with everyone who wanted to know more about working in the diving world – around the world. Great information, coming from a phenomenal amount of shared experiences throughout the globe and the dive industry.
One of the main topics was why it is interesting and exciting to become a dive professional and start working in this business, or even to start your own business in diving. According to Mark Soworka it is possible to travel a lot and see different cultures and different parts of the world working as a dive professional. He himself has an elaborate network of dive resorts and professionals. After working for many years as a dive professional, and though his network of dive-careers.com, he is now able to offer diving jobs on a regular basis. Carmelo and Cilla explained it is wonderful to work in an international environment with dive professionals and customers from all over the world who have one thing in common: they are divers! Every day again, people come into the diving resort as strangers and leave as friends after a half day of diving with other people they just met that morning. They say it is their job as dive professionals to give divers a good time, safety, professionalism and quality. According to them, one of the best aspects of being a dive professional is the appreciation of new divers because you taught them something totally new in their life and the smile of a diver coming out of the water after a beautiful dive, enjoying the underwater world and the sound of silence and bubbles that they experience under the surface. Moreover, Carmelo explained why it is an excellent idea to enrol in a PADI Divemaster Candidate Internship or PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer Internship. He said that at Sea Spirit Diving Resort, the candidates will have a full range of opportunities to get familiar with all aspects that are important to become a good dive professional, by assisting experienced PADI Instructors on courses, running the daily program on board and learning how to be a good deckhand or even how to become a skipper, handling a compressor, maintaining equipment and building experience in high quality customer service, so when completing the internship, as PADI Divemasters or PADI MSTDs, they are ready to work everywhere or making it easy for them to take it to the next level.
All in all it was a great evening inspiring divers who are interested in going PRO and PADI PRO’s who want to take the next step in their diving career! We wish all the participants good luck with their path in the diving world and know that we PADI PRO’s will be always available to give advice and help with the next step in your diving career!
Sicily SCUBAPRO Seminar as part of Dive-Careers.com Italy IDC
On the 13th of October, 2016, during the IDC from dive-careers-europe.com, we had the honour to welcome SCUBAPRO Technical Director Gilbert de Coriolis at the ATAHOTEL Naxos Beach in Giardini-Naxos, Sicily, Italy. It was going to be a day full of passion for scuba dive equipment and brilliant tips for our PADI IDC-participants. SCUBAPRO Sales Director of EMEA Gianluca Bugli and Area Manager Federico Garaventa also attended, adding a marketing perspective to an incredible dive equipment seminar.
From 09.00am in the morning we could fasten our seatbelts, in a few minutes we were blown away by the passion and enthusiasm that Gilbert spread throughout the conference room about the developments of scuba diving regulators in the last 50 years and the technology behind it. Gilbert took us on his journey, taking us from piston and diaphragm first stages, to a precise explanation of the differences between unbalanced, balanced and overbalanced first stages. Holding different parts of first stages in our hands, showing the newest models and listening to explanations about several second stages, we were taken on a journey through regulator development. Terms like ‘inhalation effort’, ‘instant flow’ and ‘hydrostatic pressure’ were explained clearly in a relaxed, passionate manner. Gilbert also shared with us the new innovations and developments at SCUBAPRO that continue to maintain that initial company goal, to have the safest and the best dive equipment on the market.
It was a fantastic way to integrate an equipment seminar into the PADI IDC of dive-careers-europe.com, dive-careers.com and Sea Spirit Diving Resort. As a dive instructor, you should have a strong working knowledge of dive equipment. The SCUBAPRO seminars integrated into www.dive-careers.com PADI Instructor Development programmes, ensure our instructors attain that thorough understanding of dive equipment. With the team from SCUBAPRO, our Sicily instructor candidates gained a unique opportunity to increase their dive equipment knowledge and will definitely explain things better to their students and divers in the future with advice on buying equipment and how to take care of it. For more information about equipment workshops during our PADI IDC, please contact Mark Soworka (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Cilla Lentz (email@example.com).

In July 2016 we conducted our first PADI Dive Instructor Course, the IDC, in Amed, Bali, with Two Fish Divers. The location was perfect for dive instructor training with such easy logistics, helping create such a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. We conducted the IDC at Suriya Rainbow resort, Amed, Bali. Calssroom is in the on site classroom, 15 meters away is the swimming pool and jump over the pool side to the beach and we had our open water destination. A thoroughly enjoyable IDC with Andrea and Melissa participating and Matt staffing. Great location to teach in and eagerly awaiting the next IDC in Amed starting the 23rd of October 2016.
During the IDC we ran a Scubapro seminar for our candidates which was joined by some staff. This gives them a more in depth look at dive equipment how it functions and importance to dive businesses. Participants were issued with Scubapro certificates.
Yvonne from the Two Fish Technical Diving Department also gave the candidates an intro into sidemount and technical diving. Gave them a chance to play around with different configurations of diving equipment in the pool. Even Remi from a previous Koh Tao IDC joined in to get a taste of tec diving.
Half way through the IDC we had a GoPro evening with some wine and some beer sponsored by PADI. It was a great chance to meet a load of dive instructors from the other dive centers in Amed. We had short talks about the state of Bali reefs by Reef Check representatives, Technical Diving with Yvonne from Two Fish, Free Diving wit Yokram Zekri from Ocean Prana and I looked at other opportunities in the dive industry. An excellent evening to look at many of the different paths you can take as a PADI Dive professional. We will do another evening like this when back in October.
And,most importantly during the Bali IDC we got to dive on some great artificial reefs. We conducted specialty training on both the Liberty wreck and artificial reefs of Jamyluk. Great dives and definitely a drawcard for completing your IDC in Amed, Bali.
I am looking forward to being back in Amed for another Bali IDC on October 23 2016. I had a great time on the July IDC and judging by the reviews, so did Mel and Andrea. Congratulations on becomign instructors and already finding successful careers. See you in Amed again soon.
Top Course Director!
“I can only recommand course director Mark Soworka if you plan to become a dive instructor 🙂 He not only prepares you for the exam, he adds extra courses about marine life, equipment and has a lot of anecdotes to share with you that will prepare you for your future carreer as an instructor! ” Melissa
