Storage Techniques for Your Diving Apparel
Scuba gear including mask, snorkel, exposure suit, and dive watch can be very expensive to acquire. But those who have the heart to explore underwater secrets may be more than willing to shell out cash just to finance their passion. However, improper storage can ruin these items easily. Hence, if you are a diver or planning to be one, here are scuba apparel maintenance tips that you have to keep in mind.
Remember that your paraphernalia should not be dried under the sun. Ultraviolet light can be harmful to neoprene, rubber, and silicone, which are among the many components of most scuba equipment and clothing. Hang them in a shady part in your home instead.
Before keeping your apparels, take care to rinse away salt water and sand. As a matter of fact, it is advisable that you do the washing before sodium chloride starts to crystallise and becomes very difficult to remove. The rule also applies for pool water as chlorine is highly corrosive too. Furthermore, take note that when cleaning gloves, boots, hoods, and wetsuits, it is not safe to use the washing machine; you will have to treat each item with utmost care. Finally, hang your suit inside out to thoroughly remove body oils and bacteria, which tend to cause odour problems. Likewise, keep the inside of your hoods and boots exposed to dry.
Once your suit and equipment have been washed and dried, store them in a cool and well-shaded place. Choose a non-humid spot in the home where the risk of mildew growth is low. Also take note that your wetsuit must be rolled and hanged to prevent creases and that all hoses in your tools should be properly placed so as to avoid kinking.
